IT Services Fee Issue

Dear all,

Good day! For your information, the IT Services Fee for Malacca campus has been reduced to RM 50 (for non-hostel residents) and RM 75 (for hostel residents). Besides this, the bandwidth will be increased to 100Mbps for Malacca campus, an increament from the initially announced 34Mbps. As for Cyberjaya campus, the bandwidth will be higher, at 150Mbps. Therefore, they will be paying RM 75 (non-hostel residents) and RM 100 (hostel residents).

The compilation which consists of official letters from SRC, presidents of component societies, petition, online petition, suggestions, unfiltered printout of the comments in SRC Blog, etc had been presented to the President's Office.

FYI, the SRC has been dissolved but we still welcome comments and feedback on this issue, and hopefully we can negotiate further. Other issues are welcome too.

Before signing off, we would like to once again thank all who supported us in everything, especially to oppose the imposition of IT fees, and some other issues regarding to welfare of the students. It was really nice working with all of you and all your contributions certainly made an impact for the betterment of students' welfare in the university!

Only students who fulfill the following qualifications shall be eligible for nomination to the SRC:

Students who are of good moral character as required by the University Rules and Regulations;
Students who, by their leadership qualities, serve as good examples to
others;
Students who have never been found guilty of disciplinary offence that carries a minimum fine of RM 100.00 or which will subject the offender to a suspension;
Students who have never been promoted on probation;
Students who have obtained a CGPA of not less than 2.7 at the time of nomination;
All candidates who stand for the election must have completed at least two semesters in MMU except for FOSEE seats;
Students who are NOT going for industrial training for that academic year.

Dear all,

There will be a dialogue session between all students of MMU Malacca and the MMU President next week where the main topic of discussion would be the imposition of the IT services fee (RM100). Details of the session are as follows:

Date: 9th July 2008 (Wednesday)
Time: 9am
Venue: Main Hall

If you do not want to pay the fees or disagree with the imposition then we suggest that you attend this session and voice out your dissatisfaction. This may be the only chance for all students to make their opinions known so use it wisely. Come up with constructive suggestions and back you claims with facts and figures whenever possible.

Aside from the IT services fee issue, you may also bring to the attention of the President any other issues or problems that you are facing.

SRC excos will be present during this dialogue session to play our role as the representatives of the students. If, for any reason, you have questions that you might be reluctant to ask during the session, you may send it to srcmelaka@mmu.edu.my and we will ask the questions on your behalf.

Clarification regarding the IT services fee

Dear all,

As you all know, the matter of the planned imposition of IT services fee is currently creating a major hype among MMU students. We, the Student Representative Council (SRC) would like to clarify that the IT services fee has NOT been implemented yet. The reason why SRC posted this issue in the bulletin board, blog and circulated hard copy notices of the issue is to gather feedback, comments and suggestions from the students and compile it in an organized manner so that it can be sent to MMU management for further review.

The compilation consists of:

A letter prepared by SRC to show disagreement to the IT services fee
Students’ petition
Students’ written feedbacks, comments and suggestions
Comments made by student in the blog (unfiltered)
Official letter by the major clubs and societies of MMU (Usrah, CLS, ICS and ISS)

We understand that with the recent price hike of major commodities the imposition of this IT services fee would further add to the burden of students. As such, we are currently engaging in various ways in addition to the ones mentioned above to stop this fee from being imposed. Any suggestions that you have towards this matter would greatly help us.

Best SRC Exco for the month of April!

Students’ Representatives Council would like to announce that Mr Rezal, Chairperson of Student Development and Sports Division (SDSD), has been selected as the Best Exco for the month of April.

The assessment of council members’ performance is done based on Key Performance Index (KPI) supervised directly by our Secretarial Department.

Our council is very glad to have Mr. Rezal as part of our team in order to sustain and form a better bonding between SRC Excos, Rakan Exco (REX) and students. Although Mr. Rezal is a soft spoken person, he did well to cope and bind his Rakan Exco to perform several program in the campus such as Construct Camp (co-organized with Students Affairs Division), University Dress Code Campaign, MMU Olympic and numerous other programs that meet his division's target and objective. Furthermore, he has a strong relationship with other students that are active in sports especially football since he's active in this field too.

He implemented a lot of multi-racial values in many of the programs carried out by his division in line with the university's objective of promoting multiculturalism, international unity, mutual understanding, tolerance, cooperation and goodwill for continued peace and harmony.

Council appreciates the honoree for his dedication to excellence and contribution to students’ welfare and the council as a whole. Mr. Rezal's efforts reflect the best efforts of the council to help build a better bond between the council and all students for the betterment of the university.

Imposition of IT services fee (RM100)

Update (June 30, 2008): The imposition of this fee is planned by the University management. We have just been told that the fee amount is still pending consideration; it has not been finalized yet.

Update (July 1, 2008): Please refrain from using derogatory terms, name calling and any form of vulgar remarks when commenting. Such comments will be deleted on sight. All comments for this particular post will be printed and submitted together with the report that we are preparing to show the students' response towards this issue.

Assalamualaikum and very good day to all,

We, from the Students Representative Council, Multimedia University (Malacca Campus) would like to hear some opinions/suggestions from students regarding the matter explained below:

Imposition of IT services fee (RM100)

The University is planning to impose an IT service fee of approximately RM100/year on all students starting from the academic year 2008/2009 (this trimester). The fee covers the maintenance fees of MMLS, course registration system, wireless services and other online systems. Besides this, a portion of the fee will be used to upgrade the bandwidth of Malacca campus (from 16 Mbps to 34 Mbps).

Unfortunately, there are several controversial issues:

1. Although the students from both of the campuses will be charged the same fee, Cyberjaya campus will get a better service in terms of bandwidth increment (from 34 Mbps to 100 Mmbps). This is because the hardware of Cyberjaya campus is more advance than us and our hardware is not able to support the 100 Mbps bandwidth (Cyberjaya hardware can support up to 400 mbps while ours can only support up till 100 Mbps).

2. Not every student is using the wireless service.

3. CITS cannot guarantee that after the imposition of the IT services fee, all the flaws that we encountered before (eg. system down during the course registration period) can be solved once and for all.

4. Number of concurrent connections to the web services such as MMLS and course registration may or may not be increased. If it is not increased, the increase in bandwidth would not make much of a difference as the number of users allowed to access the said websites will still remain the same. As such, at high usage periods (i.e. before/during exam for MMLS & course registration days) students will still have the problem of not being able to access the websites. It would be akin to widening the roads but still having the same number of exits – You’ll get to the exits/entrances (i.e. websites) faster. Once there, you’ll have to wait in line (for countless hours) just as before.

However Mr. Zaidy Jaafar, the Director of Finance Division, has said that the fee amount has not been finalized yet. Finance Division will review the amount and have a meeting with us in the near future. He also requested a report from SRC regarding this matter (including all the suggestions and the problems that have been encountered by students).

Pursuant to this, the SRC would like to know the students’ perspective on this issue. In addition to that, it would be of great assistance to us if you could include some suggestions so that we could prepare a good report.

Any comments or suggestions can be made in the following ways:

Send your comments or suggestions to the SRC room (written)
State your comments or suggestions in the comments section of this blog.

Also, we have proposed for Finance Division to conduct an open discussion session with students where they (the Finance officers) will explain the need for imposing the fee to the students and at the same time get the students’ opinions on this matter. We hope if this materializes, all students will attend the session and make known their views.

MELAKA 23 Jun - Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (SRC) Universiti Multimedia (MMU) akan menganjurkan program Malam Anugerah MMU 2008 di Dewan Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh, di sini pada 5 Julai depan.

Pengarah program, Nurul Aizam Zaini berkata, program yang bertemakan Differences in Costumes, One in Tradition itu dianjurkan bersama Bahagian Hal Ehwal Pelajar MMU.

Menurutnya, program tersebut adalah yang julung kali diadakan di Kampus Melaka dan merupakan kali ketiga anjuran MMU.

''Program ini bertujuan memberi penghargaan dan mengiktiraf kelab-kelab serta persatuan untuk kedua-dua kampus induk MMU iaitu kampus Melaka dan Cyberjaya,'' katanya di sini semalam.

Menurut Nurul Aizam, pengiktirafan itu sebagai menghargai usaha dan komitmen mereka yang berjaya menganjurkan program dan menaikkan nama MMU di peringkat kebangsaan dan antarabangsa.

Katanya, selain mengiktiraf kelab dan persatuan, acara itu turut diadakan bagi merai dan memberi anugerah kepada individu yang cemerlang dalam bidang akademik atau kokurikulum.

Usaha itu, katanya, bertujuan meningkatkan kreativiti pelajar dalam berpersatuan dan diharap menjadi contoh kepada institusi pengajian tinggi lain.

''Kita mahu meningkatkan semangat pelajar agar mereka terlibat secara aktif dalam persatuan dan membantu membina karakter diri masing-masing menerusi kegiatan kokurikulum," katanya.

Katanya, antara anugerah utama yang disediakan ialah anugerah kelab dan persatuan terbaik, individu terbaik, anugerah khas dan anugerah pengurusan kelab terbaik.

''Secara keseluruhannya, kita menyediakan 44 anugerah yang akan disampaikan pada malam tersebut," katanya.

Library fees imposed on graduating students (Update)

In a previous post on this blog, we had written about the issue of library fees being imposed on graduating students. In pursuant to this, today, the Students' Welfare Division of the SRC had a meeting with the Finance Division Director, Mr. Zaidy Jaafar, to solve this problem.

Mr Zaidy had said that the graduating students do not have to pay the library fees. If any of the graduating students i.e students who have completed their studies or are awaiting convocation (this year or next year or after that) have been billed for the library fees for this academic year, they need to:

Email SRC Exco Mr Lee Chong Hong (leechong_1221@yahoo.com.sg) and state your Name, Student ID, Date of completion of studies and expected date of graduation. The SRC will collate the information of all affected students and send an official request to Finance Division for the said students to exempted from paying the library fees.

Postmortem Session for Orientation Committee 08/09

As you all have already been informed, today (Friday, 13 June 2008) we will be having a postmortem session. The details are as follows:

The purpose of this session is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the orientation week that had ended a few hours ago. This year's orientation programme has been completed successfully and we owe this success entirely to the OCs who had committed their time and energy towards ensuring this success. OC Camp (Updated with more pictures)

In preparation for the June 2008/2009 intake orientation programme, a camp was held from 5th till 7th June 2008 for the Orientation Committee (OC). The purpose of this camp was to enable all the OCs to get to know each other and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses in order to determine which division (mobilization, venue, food, security, etc) they would be assigned to.

The first day of the camp was held at Taman Botanikal, Melaka while the second and third day of the camp was held in campus. OCs had to go through various activities such as station games, simulation exercises and many others that tested both their mental and physical prowess.

Library fees imposed on graduating students

Recently we have received a complaint from a student saying that although the student is going to graduate this August (convocation), the student's financial statement indicates that he/she still has to pay library fees for the upcoming academic year (2008/2009). We would like to assure all affected students that this problem is currently being attended to.

Two new rooms to be used as operation rooms for clubs and societies!

Dear all,

Hope you're all having a good time. We've got some good news for you all; for the clubs and societies at least. For your kind information, Sri Berlian (previously occupied by the Student Publication Board) has been partition into two separate rooms. Most of the work has been completed. We need only move in some chairs and table into the new rooms and they'll be ready for use!

Clubs and societies that would like to use these new rooms as their operations rooms can submit the applications. The policies and rules of operation room application still remains the same. However, from next trimester onwards, all applications must be submitted to Mr Lee Chong Hong (016 - 7467979).

For your kind information, Miss Jess (Yeong Khar Mun), the Administrative Officer of the SRC, will go to Cyberjaya campus to continue her studies there. We wish her well and may she be successful in all her future endeavours.

Lack of updates and something to add

Dear all,

Firstly, we would like to apologize for not being able to update this blog as often as before due to various tasks that have to completed soon, preparations for the final exam as well as preparing for the upcoming June 2008/2009 intake orientation.

A number of visitors (presumed to be MMU Malacca students) have left some interesting comments on this blog. While we currently are not able to write individual replies, due to time constraints and lack of manpower, to all these comments, rest assured that your concerns will be addressed.

In a related issue, we would like to state that although we want to promote transparency as much as possible and would like to allow the students the right to express their opinions, we have noticed that some students have taken advantage of this by posting comments in a vulgar manner. For comments like this, we would like to request you to refrain from using such languages in the future. Any comments containing expletives will be deleted on sight. Please put forth your points in a nice manner as ths blog is read by many MMU students and lecturers alike. In fact, take a look at the visitors statistics and you will be able to see that even students from many top universities in the world have and are still reading this blog. We surely would not want them to leave this blog with any negative perceptions about MMU students now, do we?

Cyclone Nargis

On May 2, 2008, Myanmar (also known as Burma) was hit by a tropical cyclone. The cyclone was later christened Nargis.

Entire towns have been destroyed and almost a million people left injured and homeless while suffering the lost of loved ones. Cyclone Nargis has, at the time of writing, caused at least 78,000 deaths with nearly 56,000 people missing.

However, the numbers may not be entirely accurate as Labutta Township alone was reported to have suffered 80,000 fatalities. Some have estimated that the death toll may well be over 100,000.

Sichuan Earthquake

Ten days later, the world was shocked by another tragedy which happened in the Sichuan Province of China. The province had suffered a major earthquake (Sichuan) which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale.

As of May 17, official figures state that 28,920 are confirmed dead, including 28,389 in Sichuan province, and 198,347 injured. Tens of thousands are missing, approximately 14,000 of them buried, and eight provinces were affected.

Our role

The Students' Representative Council in collaboration with the Student Affairs Division (STAD) will be leading the effort to collect as much donations as possible to be sent to be these affected nations. In line with this commitment, we will be placing donation boxes in major exam venues in the campus in the hope that all students would be able to make a minimum contribution of RM1. Apart from this, we would also be actively seeking for donations from the academicians and staff of the university.

A donation box has also been placed inside the SRC room. If you feel like donating, you may do so there. Other methods of collecting funds will be devised soon. Any updates or announcements will be made through MMU Bulletin Board and this blog.

All around the world, disasters strike without even a moment's notice bringing about deaths totalling hundreds of thousands, if not millions, in its wake. We, Malaysians, should be grateful for not having to endure such tragedies.

Let us be thankful for living in a country which is peaceful and not vulnerable to such disasters. Let us reach out to those affected souls in this their time of need. No amount of contribution is small or big enough. Help us, help them.

CLP to be scrapped - The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: The Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) will soon be scrapped in favour of the Common Bar Course (CBC) and Common Bar Exam (CBE), Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim (pic left) said.

Citing that a study by a committee appointed by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB) on how to implement the move was in its final stages, Zaid said the goal was to standardise and improve the quality of law practitioners.

“The CBC and CBE will be mandatory for anyone who wants to practise law, whether they are local or foreign graduates.”

Zaid, however, would not speculate on whether the CBC and CBE would be the only prerequisite before a graduate is called to the Bar or whether chambering would continue.

“The course and exam will be overseen by a non-profit organisation supported by the Government.”

Zaid, who was speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby, was expanding on a written reply to Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh’s question on whether the Government had plans to abolish the CLP and what it would be replaced with.

He added that views from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Bar Council, Malaysia Qualification Agency and universities were also being sought by the committee.

“The LPQB has also advised the committee to look into the possibility of local universities already offering law degrees to also offer the CBC, considering they have the infrastructure.

“I know this issue has been going on for a long time and that questions had been raised by students and parents. As such, we are moving forward to implement what has been discussed.”

When asked if the move was due to complaints by CLP students over the low pass rate, Zaid said he did not want to discuss that but was more concerned about executing what was planned.

He added that the report on the study would be ready in a number of months and that it was part of his responsibility as law minister to improve the current situation.

MMU’s second president wants to improve on the university’s R&D capabilities.

MULTIMEDIA University (MMU) president Prof Dr Zaharin Yusoff, who marked his 100th day in office recently, is plotting the university’s research and development roadmap.

“The roadmap is about 50% complete and will show a clear direction of where we are heading and enable us to focus on our strengths and niche areas.”

Prof Zaharin said the university has also been reorganised into nine divisions, each with specific targets.

Five thrust areas have also been identified by the university – academic, research and development, commercialisation, human resources and administrative support.

Under academic, said Prof Zaharin, MMU would be rationalising its programmes to ensure they were more relevant to industry.

PROF ZAHARIN: We encourage students to take part in activities that help their development.

The university, he added, was known for its programmes in Engineering, Information Technology, Business and Management with a niche in Creative Multimedia, Law and Life Sciences.

“Students will be provided with the necessary skills and will be prepared for any technological changes, and contribute to the changes themselves.”

Prof Zaharin said success in the commercialisation of R &D in telecommunications technology, knowledge management technology, creative multimedia and innovations management would bring prestige to MMU and result in industry-relevant courses.

It’s commercial arm – Unitele Multimedia Sdn Bhd (UMSB) – will market its R&D products, manage consultancy work generated by the expertise within the university's faculties and centres as well as conduct various training programmes and short courses.

“The main asset of any organisation is its human resource. We encourage our students to work on activities that will help in their development, be they academic or inter-personal, to become well-rounded individuals who are prepared for working life,” said Prof Zaharin.

MMU is in the process of establishing a one-stop centre for students to facilitate their activities, resolve problems and assist in obtaining accommodation.

“Administrative support is the engine room for the university as it provides the critical support for the other thrust areas,” he said, adding that the university was also in the process of establishing a foundation – Yayasan Universiti Multimedia – which will offer scholarships.

Prof Zaharin replaced Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon as MMU president this year. Dr Ghauth led the university for 11 years and was instrumental in building it up. MMU is the largest private university in the country with over 20,000 students.

Prof Zaharin previously served as Universiti Tenaga Nasional's Graduate Studies College dean and has extensive experience in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence. He started his career as a lecturer at the School of Mathematics at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 1980.

Clarification regarding the barring policy.

Dear all,

It was brought to our attention that many students were barred this trimester. One of the reason for their barring was because the students did not pay their fees this trimester because in trimester 2 (last trimester) this year, Finance Department had announced that those with balance less than RM10,000 will not be barred. Our Students' Welfare Division had approached Finance Department to seek clarification regarding this matter and they were told that the policy of not barring students with less than RM10,000 balance applies only in the short trimester.

In view of this, we would like to request all affected students to pay their outstanding balance as soon as possible or meet Finance Department during their negotiation session. If you face any other problems kindly forward your views/problems to us.

Library operation hours extended!

The Students' Welfare Division of SRC Malacca 2007/2008 had a meeting today with Madam Aminah Abdullah Sani, The Director of Multimedia University Libraries to discuss several issues that have been raised by the students. Among the issues discussed was the request for the extension of library operating hours during examination period.

We are glad to announce that the request was accepted and would like to take this opportunity to thank Madam Aminah and the library management for allowing this to happen.

From May 1, 2008 till May 21, 2008 the library operating hours will be extended to 2AM.

Students, however, are reminded that this is just a trial. The library will review this decision based on the students' response. If the response is good, meaning that there are large turnouts of students during the extended operation hours, the extension of the operation hours might be continued in the next trimester.

All students are advised to fully utilize the library and the services provided. Students are also requested to abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the library at all times. This is to ensure that the students and the library management can work hand in hand in providing a world-class study environment and library facilities to MMU students.

Library Books Update

For the year 2008, our library was given an allocation of RM 3.6 million for its budget. A portion of the money will be used to purchase new books.

The normal practice of the library is that they will update the books all the time and not only in certain months. This year library is planning to purchase 7000 books according to the recommendation of faculties.

"Moments with SRC" - Reply of Finance Department regarding the "No Refund Policy"

Dear all,

In the recently concluded "Moments with SRC", clarifications on "No Refund Policy" had been made by Mr. Zailani (Deputy Director of Finance Department). According to Mr. Zailani the objective of the policy is to help the students who are weak in financial management. Basically the excess or overpayment will be brought forward to offset the future billings. Hence the students can ensure that they have the money to clear the whole or part of the outstanding payments in the coming trimester.

However for the students who need the refund, they can appeal (either write in or email) to Finance Department provided that a valid and strong reason is given such as family emergencies, house rent payment, buying books, industrial training expenses, living expenses, etc. Successful appellants will get the refund within 14 days after the approval.

Therefore for those who need the refund kindly email to finance@mmu.edu.my or write in to Finance Department.

Moments with SRC - Less than 3 days away.

With the SRC set on hosting the "Moments with SRC" event which is scheduled to take place on this coming Monday, 14th April 2008 (8pm, CLC 0001), tensions are mounting as students are seen discussing questions and issues they would like raised during this dialogue session.

The event will see in attendance the Head of Student's Activity Unit from STAD (Mr Syukor Hashim), the Chief Financial Officer cum Director of Finance Department(Mr Zaidy Jaafar), Deputy Director of Finance Department (Mr Zailani Kamardin) and the Head of Credit Management Unit of the Finance Department (Mr Adanan Zainal).

With 3 of the 4 VIPs representing Finance Department, which has over the years accumulated the dissatisfaction of the majority of MMU students, questions on the controversial "No Refund Policy", allocation of Student Trust Fund and the likes are expected to be raised.

Issues of concern that might translate into questions directed to the Head of Student's Activity Unit, Mr Syukor Hashim, would be the allocation of budget for club and society activities, clubs and societies organising events that are not in accordance to their primary objectives as well as claims of clubs and societies spending their budget on lavish appreciation dinners.

The night will not be easy on the Students' Representative Council (SRC) as well as there will be questions of their activities since the council started their term in Trimester 2 this academic year. Presentation and Q & A sessions have been planned to answer all questions raised. The Students' Welfare Division of the SRC will make public the outcome and the status of all issues and complaints received.

Supplementary Examinations and MMLS (Clarification from the President's Office)

There appears to be a message circulating on Internet messengers regarding the President's plans to cancel the supplementary examinations and MMLS system currently in use in MMU.

The rumour have been successful in spamming poor Ms Julina of Exam Unit's mailbox with hundreds of emails, however it is completely unfounded as the university has no such plans.

Leader should be:-

Proactive: A proactive leader will took responsibility for his or her life, rather than looking for causes in outside circumstances or other people.

Positive: A positive thinking leader will always lead his team members to a good and bright side.

Persistent: A good leader should have determination is executing his planning. They must ready and well prepare themselves for a long term contribution. Besides, they also should have determination in their stand and should give up in any circumstances until they reach their goals and objectives.

Persevere: A leader should try to protect every resource (human capital, intelligence and skills) they have.

Leadership is a marathon. (It is a long journey with full of challenges. Use whatever method you have in order to get through all the challenges )
Leadership is a giving back to your parents and for those who help you most.
Never let anything get you down. Be motivated and not demotivated.
Leadership is about giving back. Giving back to the society, to the parties who have interest with you and to all stakeholders.
The success of failure is depends on your own hand. If a person is ready and well prepared, he will achieve whatever goals he had set.
A success leader always plan for fail, but not fail to plan.

Elements of a Successful Job Search

Starting a job search can often be a daunting experience, after all where do you start and which sources of information should you use? This article aims to examine in detail the elements of a successful job search, drawing upon my experience as a recruiter over a number of years.

Step 1. Objective Setting

Set a clear objective

It is impossible to decide whether something has been successful unless you define some basic objective in the first instance. Think about some of the following:
a) Are you looking for an identical job in a different company?
b) Are you looking for a career change into a specific industry?
c) Or are you still undecided about what job you want, but intend to cast the net as wide as possible and see what happens?Once you have clarified your job search goals this will influence what you expect to gain at the end of the process.

Step 2. Update your Resume
Some people get steps 1 and 2 in the wrong order in their haste to find employment. They update their resume and then start thinking about what job they would like to search for. Remember your resume provides a snapshot of your skills and abilities but you should always tailor it to the type of job you are applying for. Don’t just submit the same resume for multiple jobs. Take time to emphasise particular skills in your resume that may appeal more to some employers than others.

Step 3 : Dress to impress
Go out and buy a good interview suit, even if you don’t normally wear one. Looking smart and presentable to any prospective employer is essential as it communicates respect and attention to detail. Getting your interview attire ready before you commence your actual job search will ensure that you are ready to respond immediately if an employer asks you to attend an interview at short notice. The last thing you want to be doing is trying to buy smart clothing on the day of an interview.
Tip: Go for dark colors, like blue, navy or black for interview clothing and always stick to a plain white shirt or blouse. These colors are quite neutral and smart and are unlikely to be off putting to a prospective employer.

Step 4 : Newspaper Media

The traditional way to search for a new job is by combing through newspapers or specialist magazines to find suitable vacancies. These media types can be very useful. Newspaper advertising provides a good overview of local vacancies whilst specialist magazines offer opportunities within a particular industry like social working, engineering , aerospace etc.
These should definitely be an essential element of a successful job search but their major drawback is that you often have to shift through lots of irrelevant vacancies until you find something suitable.

Step 5 : Internet Job Search
The internet is by far the most effective media for searching for job opportunities, as most company websites or specialist job search sites are regularly updated, offer instant access to potential employers and are highly interactive.
Specialist online job search sites like www.monster.com, one of the market leaders are even better.
Features include the ability to upload your resume directly onto the site so that thousands of potential employers can view it directly and email alerts which trigger an email to be sent directly to your email inbox if suitable jobs that match your criteria are posted on the site. Online job search sites like these offer flexibility, speed and the ability to narrow down your search options if there is just too much information to go through.
These sites are an essential element to your job search and I would highly recommend monster.com who host some of the largest online selection of jobs covering virtually every industry and specialism.

Step 6 : Register with an employment agency
Employment agencies don’t always have the best reputations but there are some really excellent agencies out there and they can add some real value to your job search. Having worked for a recruitment agency for a number of years here are some of the benefits they can bring to your job search:

a) Objective Critique of your resume
Whilst we all like to believe that we have written an excellent resume, a good employment agency will sit down with you and go through it in detail, suggesting improvements along the way.

b) Agencies know companies better than you
Employment agencies really do know what their client companies want and can provide you with invaluable information or interview coaching regarding what skills you should be emphasising.

c) Agencies have good links to companies
It’s sad to say but sometimes if you apply directly to a company your resume can go to the bottom of the queue, but agencies can speed the feedback process up by acting as a representative on your behalf.

Most employment agencies are commission based and it’s in their interest to get the fastest feedback possible after your resume has been submitted to a company. As a result they are likely to have developed good channels of communication with hiring managers and will be actively promoting your skills to key decision makers in the company.

Tip: Ask around for a recommendation of a good agency, that way you’ll quickly discover who which can add value to your job search.

Networking is one of the oldest and most effective forms of job hunting available and yet it is also one of the least utilised. So before you scour the internet for a new job or flick through magazine advertisements here are a few thoughts about the power of networking in the job search process.

Step 7 : Personal Recommendation
This is a powerful weapon in your job hunting armoury because friends, family or colleagues are more often the best sources of information for finding job vacancies. How many of your colleagues have been for job interviews recently? It’s worth asking around because if they have similar skills to you then it’s likely that the jobs they have applied for will also be of direct relevance to you. Why wade through hundreds of jobs elsewhere if you can apply for one or two that have been personal recommended to you and that are a good match already. In addition if you apply to a company where you already know someone who works there, they can put in a good word for you.
A colleague of mine once recruited five skilled IT consultants without once having to advertise. The first person he called told a friend and so on until all five had applied for five available jobs and where successful. This can be much better for you as you are likely to end up working alongside people you know and are comfortable with, leading to increased levels of job satisfaction. So ask around before you spend time actively job hunting, because personal recommendation is a power networking tool in job search.

Step 8 : Bypass official Channels
Networking allows you to get a head start in the job search process. Once a job is advertised the chances of you being a successful applicant reduce, but if you are recommended by a friend or already have a social/professional relationship with the hiring manager you can get a head start. Whilst company’s don’t admit it they will speed up the interview process of a particular candidate if they come through from a recommendation. Better still the company may not have to advertise the job if another colleague mentions your credentials before a vacancy is officially made public, saving them time and money.

Step 9 : Improved knowledge of the job requirements
If you are applying for a job at a company where you already have friends, family or clients then this will improve your understanding of what the job requires and boost your chances at interview. Demonstrating to a prospective employer that you have intimate knowledge of their business or industry is a powerful tool and you will stand out more distinctively than another candidate who has a lesser understanding.

Step 10 : Inside information on the assessment process.
The key to making it through the assessment process is understanding what is required of you. Increasingly companies are turning to assessment centres which are set up to test various technical, interpersonal and knowledge based skills. Networking is an ideal means of obtaining information about what you can expect to face, whilst you won’t be able to find out the specifics of the tests involved, asking others who have completed these assessments can help you understand what you will be tested on. This can be really helpful as it gives you the opportunity to prepare yourself properly for the assessment to give you a solid start.

Proton to recall Savvy cars

PETALING JAYA: Proton is recalling 34,000 Proton Savvy cars following a possible wheel bearing problem.

It said in a statement that the problem was brought to its attention during a regular random check, which found the possibility of water entering the rear wheel bearing.

This could lead to a malfunction of the affected components, with loosening of the wheel as the worst-case scenario.

The national carmaker has advised all Savvy owners to immediately take their vehicles to the nearest Proton Edar or EON service branch for inspection.

Checks will be conducted and replacement parts installed (if required) free of charge.

The recall, however, is purely a precautionary measure, stressed Proton managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

“This is purely a precautionary measure to place priority on our customers’ safety.

“We are recalling all Savvys to ensure this, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused,” he said in the statement.

EVERYDAY IS A NEW DAY

Assalamualaikum and a Good day to all

I would like to thank the organizer of this event and the college for inviting me and my friends to give a speech about life in title Everyday is a new day. Life is not free, it is priceless. The opportunities and chances given to us, each day to breathe and walk is a blessing but what makes our daily life different depends on how we appreciate the small things that we have.

There are people, who wake up everyday thinking the sun will not shine again and whatever they have is fate, but the thing that they don’t realize is the opportunity and chance given to them to makes a difference to their lives again. Imagine the people who died in wars, accidents or even unexpected death, will they have the chance to correct their wrongs and make their life better than before? NO!! But to the people who are given the opportunity to live again the next day is a blessing and a gift because life can’t be bought and everyday is a chance of a new beginning for a new chapter in each of our lives.

So what should we do?

Firstly stop complaining and start thinking positive. Always keep a positive mind for a positive surrounding. The attraction of our mind will effect the actions of our body. Therefore if we want to have a good life start changing our mind set and thinks positive. This is the principles of law of attraction.

Secondly, start each day fresh and forget the pass mistakes and failure done “what’s done is done” treat Eveready as it is your last. This way we will always work hard and do the best that we can and not take things or even people for granted.

Thirdly, try improving yourself throughout the day, whether this means reading a book, getting some exercise or even paying your neighbors a compliment. This will help us to improve our lives. Change does not come in a day or tow but it come from the continues effort

Therefore, if failed in your exams that you have worked hard for it is not the end. It is a lesson for us to do better next time. Never give up and always treat everyday as an opportunity to change and become better...

MMU Open Day 2008 (Malacca campus)

MMU Open Day is an annual event in MMU. This year the event was done on 16 March 2008 with the central location being Exam hall (Malacca campus). For this year, MMU open day was held from 9 am to 4 pm.

On the day, 11 of SRC Excos were invited to be part of the program. All the Excos were tasked to be campus tour guide. Representatives from CCU (Corporate Communications Unit, MMU) arranged the tour time and the Excos brought the parents to the respective areas. From what I can say about the event, it brings benefit to MMU in terms of promoting MMU to others. I did chat with some parents and some of them really came from other state just to bring their children see MMU campus and to witness our daily operations. For SRC, I feel that it is a good opportunity for us to build relationship with other staff in MMU especially people from CCU. On the day itself also we can see our MMU President also turn up with their family and it is a good opportunity to have a chat with him.

Before I end my report, I hope for next MMU Open day, SRC will be given another opportunity to be part of it since I think it bringing a lot of benefits to everyone.

Public Speaking Event at MiCoST

MiCoSt, one of the college under MARA at Melaka had invited SRC Malacca to a Public Speaking Event at their campus. The event was organized by Student Association held on 14th March 2008 at 8.30 pm.

SRC Malacca was represented by 6 excos on that night namely, Yeo, Haikal, Khalil, Abdulqader, Osama and I (Mohd Rezal). On that night, 3 of us were invited to deliver a speech on topic “Everyday is a New Day”.

Before the event ended, the master of toastmaster association in Melaka, Mr. Jeffery gave his comments and some tips on how to improve our public speaking skills.

In my opinion, the event was so simple yet it ran smoothly and I can say the event met its objective, which is to give exposure to students about the important of public speaking.

Updates on Students’ Issues and Welfare

Very good day,

Dear all students,

Based on the meeting between SRC and FMD previously, SRC had requested to provide two more spotlights at main field and improve the facilities provide. FMD did promise that the matters will be solved after midterm break. As you all can see, the facilities already been set up, therefore we would like to give special thanks for the cooperation given by FMD in solving the matters arose on time. Therefore, we want to remind all students to take care of the facilities provided and utilize it properly.

Secondly, additional update on the status of the courses offered from FBL. This is to inform you that Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA - previously known as LAN) at its meeting on 16 Feb 2008 has agreed to accredit the programmes as below:

a) Bachelor of Law (Hons)

b) Master of Philosophy (Management)

On parking outside campus issue, the municipal, MBMB did not allow any of us to park at unassigned car park. However, MBMB gave us a verbal statement that they will not interrupt the area in front of MMU (between MMU and EP). They will only interrupt if the residents of Bukit Beruang complaints.

Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah

Vehicles are not allowed to park at back gate (IXORA) areas as it obstructs the traffic flow of Taman Dahlia, and oftenly receive complaints from Taman Dahlia residents. Besides, students should not double park, or park in the middle of the road (leading to Rumah Kuning – in front of MMU main entrance). On the other hand, we, SRC will propose to increase the students’ car park within campus area to the higher management.

Any further progress pertaining to the students’ welfare will be update later. If you face any complications or difficulties, do come to us, or contact any SRC EXCOS.

Introduction:

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar started with his talk with the introduction about his achievement and experience as Malaysia first astronaut. He is Malaysia first astronaut who was launched to International Space Station aboard Soyuz TMA-11 with the expedition 16 crews on October 10, 2007. Sheikh Muszaphar flew under an agreement with Russia through the Angkasawan program, and returned to Earth on October 21, 2007, aboard Soyuz TMA-10 with the Expedition 15 crew members, Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov, after nine days aboard the station.

After the brief introduction from him, he started with some quotes to motivate the participants. According to him, many people are looking for a good leader, but they need a person who can work well with the team. This statement means that a leader not only needs to be competence solely but have to be able to perform in a team as well. He also mentioned that mental strength is the key to success for a person who leads. Mental strength can be clearly seen from him as the Malaysia first astronaut who is being so determined, fearless, and strong. He shared his experiences where he tried to involve in different fields in order to seek for his real interest. He assured the participants that there is no wrong trying in different fields before we can really find our ultimate life goal.

For him, he has been dreaming to become an astronaut since he was 10 years old. He had been working hard for 15 years to make his dream a realistic now. Again, he told the undergraduates who attended that day there should be no restriction in having ambition in life. When there is a will, there is a way. Dream can be realized if we really work hard towards it. One thing he kept stressing on is to believe in ourselves and not to fear on the obstacles ahead. We must take steps to be brave and motivate ourselves from time to time.

In the middle of the conference, he also mentioned the purpose he goes around whole Malaysia is to inspire more youth as well as young children about the field of astronomy. He always believe that one of the role of leader is to inspire and to aspire people around them and he really hope he is doing the right thing now. His mission of inspiring the rest of Malaysian has been done through the way of sharing his experience in outer space. Basically, he had shared his experience in 3 important parts which include pre-launching, during in space, and post-landing. As he continued, most of the equipping and adapting process had been done before the launching to space. This would include tough army training, anti-gravity training, experiment rehearsal and so on. Process of equipping ourselves no matter in what field is definitely tough, but it is worth as he always reminded himself what he did is for the benefits of the nation.

During in space, he shared his experience on how to carry out his “solat” as a Muslim. Other than that, we also shared his experiences on how to fast in space and celebrate his Ramadhan there. He also told the undergraduates that the foreigners really love Malaysia local delicacies and foods a lot. Aside from that, he touched about his experiments during in ISS. He had been carried out an experiment on the growth of cell and cancer cell in space in order to assist in the medical field on finding the cure for cancer. Other than that, he also shared his feeling when he looks at planet Earth from space. He described it as the most magnificent scene he ever seen in his life and at that moment he can feel the greatness of the universe creator, Allah. By looking at earth as a whole also inspire him to care more about global issues instead of merely country issue. This would include issues like pollution, war, hunger and so on. He also shared stories which everyone curious the most, by telling the audience how he went for toilet.

The memorable moment in his life ended very fast, and day before he leaved the space, he heard azan which can not be heard by others in the ISS. This remind him that it is time to go back to Earth and serve the rest with what he has gained. Now, it is time for him to go around Malaysia and inspire more people as this is not his mission alone but it is the mission of the rest of Malaysians as well. At the same time, he still can feel his passion in medical field and he does not want to neglect it. So, in rotation, we will go back to his work at least 2 times a week. Added to this, he told the rest that it is enjoyable to do whatever we have passion and enthusiasm towards it.

Before he ended his part, he stressed on the importance of staying focus on whatever we convey and be less selfish as we share, the more people benefited from it, the more we gain ourselves as well. We must also be brave, confident, and able to lead. There is one quote from his speech saying “what the mind believes, the body can achieve”. Then, he ended his talk.

Conclusion:

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar had conveyed his message through a very close-to-audience method whereby he inspire through the sharing of experience instead of throwing a bunch of theories to the audience. The talk was very exciting and full with surprise as he shared many special moments in his journey to space. The talk manages to catch most of the audience attention and hopefully it can really inspire more people to follow his path and become the future astronaut of Malaysia. Of course, another great dream is to have our own space rocket and launch centre. This dream can only be realized if there is really a great awareness among Malaysia community and from there we have a group of talented and skillful people. Then only the dream is possible to be realized.

Career Planning is a long process, which begins right from the time one starts visiting school. Choosing a job that will suit you best depend on a number of factors, beginning with your interest and what you enjoy most. This is most important since there is no point working if; you do not enjoy the work you are doing. Secondly, it is also important to know what you wish to achieve in future. Setting prior goals is essential as this is what is going to motivate you in attaining results at the earliest.

The initial few years of your career are the most crucial period. It is during this phase that you realize which will be the perfect job for you. Counselors also suggest that one should keep experimenting with a variety of profiles during this period to see where the interest actually lies. The career planning cycle has been broken into four stages that help in evaluating your position and take you to your desired position. The four stages are as follows:

Where you are? Where can you be? How can you be there? Are you actually getting there?

Let’s now study these four stages and see what they actually mean.
The first step in career planning is self-assessment. To find out ‘Where you are’ placed and why you are in the position. Once you start evaluating your position you will know how focused or lost you are. And accordingly, you will also know how to refocus on your goals and move ahead. Proper and effective evaluation of the reason for your stagnation or your development is also essential. On doing this, you will know if the job you are currently pursuing is actually of interest to you or not.

Your next level should be to set goals, i.e. answering the question, ‘Where can you be?’ This is a very practical stage of your career planning and no assumptions or superficial beliefs would help you in this situation. Your assessment should be an effective reality check on your growth to find out of the loopholes if it exists anywhere. At this level, you also need to make up your mind clearly as to where you really wish to get, while you are making your career moves.

On answering the above two, you have now successfully reached the third and most dynamic stage of your career planning. Here you need to figure out ‘How can you be there?’ and prepare your skills and knowledge accordingly. Do a SWOT analysis on your self, i.e. a rigorous check of your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. This is the stage of implementing your plans. This is the execution phase.

Next comes a final assessment, to find out whether you are actually getting there. This is a periodical check on your moves. And will guide you to the right path.

The next most important thing in choosing the right career is to evaluate if your values, beliefs and attitude will fit in the job or not. There is no job satisfaction if you are not rightly and adequately paid for the job. And this is one reason for which most people are dissatisfied with their work.

Here is the summary taken from Norman Hakim (CEO of KRU Groups) during his talk :

Ø The “silaturrahim”/ relationship are important among family members and society entities.

Ø To the people that had been control by the family, it is good for their relationship, but the disadvantage is they will be less exposed to the outside world.

Ø The attitudes that need to bring along to tighten up and develop our relationship with other people are confidence on ourselves to be positive, and attract the positive elements toward us.

Ø Other than that, the discipline, punctuality, commitment, and passion to do every single thing that will determine how success you are. When a person is really passionate about something, he/she will really struggle towards achieving it, then it will result in the success of the relationship.

Here is the summary taken from Datuk Hajjah Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin (a wife and businesswoman, popular singer in Malaysia) during her talk :

Ø Everyone needs to have relationships, and it is very important to have contact and communicate with the people that can help us. Even we had a very high education level, we still need to know how to gone through the challenges that might appear in our life through the relationship with other people.

Ø When talk about the critics from other people, we must always take it as a positive things from society towards the improvement of ourselves.

Ø She had the chance to work and meet many different kinds of people, and from different working style as well as their background. In order to maintain the relationship with all that people, the most important thing for her is communication. In developing good relationship, we need to have good and skillful interaction technique.

Ø To develop a better communication style and technique, we need to always learn and practice, and we need to know who is the person that we communicating with.

Ø Besides that, we must always be humble with other people, and sacrifice to the people that bring us up. Even if we’re very tired with the working schedule, we still need to allocate our time with the people in order to maintain the relationship. In her context as a singer, she needs to entertain her fans.

Visit from University Malaysia Sabah

The visit from the group of the School of Business & Economics of University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) ‘Project Ke Semenanjung & Singapura’ took place on the 9^th and 10^th of January 2008. The delegation which consisted of 9 female students, 4 male students and 1 male lecturer arrived at the Melaka Sentral from University Sains Malaysia, Penang at around 6pm and were immediately taken for prayers and then for a seafood dinner in Umbai using the MMU bus.

With late notification over their tour to MMU Malacca campus, swift preparation to host the UMS touring group took place with several divisions lending a helping hand. Most notable was the officers from the Students Affairs Division (STAD), School Relations & Promotion Programme (SRPP) and the Corporate Communication and Chancellery (CCC) divisions that relentlessly helped the SRC in terms of accommodation, transportation, briefings and goodie packs to ensure that the delegation’s stay in Malacca would be comfortable and fruitful.

Being the first local university and only the second university to be hosted in the history of SRC MMU after the University of Prince Songkhla of Thailand which came two years ago, the team led by the SRC president, Mohd Hamdan Bin Mohd Sharif briefed the UMS team about the university through verbal and video presentation. Due to the fact that the tour coincided with the Awal Muharram holidays a comprehensive tour around the campus was not possible. Yet the group was given an insight of how the campus was by visiting the presidents square, the library and the Common Lecture Complex (CLC).

Soon after the briefing the group from UMS was treated to a sumptuous lunch at the Sri Zamrud (SEC) before heading to Malacca town to visit several historical sites such as the Fort A Famosa. Fort St. John and Perigi Hang Tuah. Before leaving back to Melaka Sentral the whole team consisting SRC MMU Malacca and the touring group from UMS moved on to the Mahkota Parade as well as to the Melaka Mega Mall in Dataran Pahlawan for shopping of souvenirs. The MMU bus headed to Melaka Sentral to bid adieu to the group as they were moving down south to University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) under their Project Ke Semenanjung Dan Singapura program. Their bus to Johor left around 7pm with memories and praises over the way the MMU teams hosted them back here.

Summary of meeting with Security Department

Dear all,

Kindly be advised that there was a meeting between Security Department and SRC on 25 February, 2008. The following are the issues we raised up in the meeting, and a summary of it.

Additional car park for students

In-campus – Security Dept. advised all students to make full use of the parking space available first. From the previous meeting, Security Dept. also pointed out that students did not fully utilize the students car park, especially the portion near Tmn. Bunga Raya gate. However, SRC will still follow up on additional car park issues.

Off-campus – SRC pointed out that sometimes students get summoned when parking outside campus. Security Dept. will bring up this issue to the local authority (police and MBMB). However, students are advised to be extra careful when parking outside before any confirmation made. In addition, Security Dept. also urged all students to have MMU car park sticker so that the enforcements will easily recognize students’ vehicle. On IXORA side, there will be higher risk of getting summoned as improperly parked cars will obstruct traffic flow of Tmn. Dahlia.

Besides, Security Dept. advised all students to follow the dress code regulations in MMU. We were also advised to display our students SMART CARD at all times in the campus.

Multimedia University Clubs Challenge Trophy ‘07

The Multimedia University Clubs Challenge Trophy or more popularly known as MCCT which enters its 3^rd edition took place in a simple yet eventful manner on the 18th December 2007.

With over 30 clubs participating in this annual event it was indeed a fresh start-up for the newly assembled SRC of the session 2007/2008.

Among the notable participants were the two time champions, Indian Cultural Society and Astro Nature Club which have never failed to be in the top three winners bracket ever since the inception of MCCT. However, it was the University Peer Group (UPG) that stole the thunder by winning the tournament, running away with the champion’s trophy as well the prize money of RM100.

In keeping with the motto of the Students' Representative Council for this year which is ‘Actuality in Action, Integrity in Principle’, several participating teams had to be disqualified because of the breach of allowable conducts during the competition.

According to the Director of the event, Mr Osama, an an exco of the Clubs & Societies Management Division (CMSD), the number of participants this year had decreased from a total of 38 clubs last year to just over 30 clubs this year. This, he added, may be attributed to the lack of preparation time due to the delay in the Students' Representative Council elections this year.

Finally, we on behalf of the SRC 2007/2008 would like to congratulate all the winners of the event:

Summary of Outcome of Meeting with FMD

Dear all,

Here, i would like to summarize the outcome of the meeting between SRC and FMD (Facilities Management Division).

1. Lightings

- for basketball court, SRC need to refer to the sports unit for further action.

- 2 more spotlight application for main field and Plaza Siswa was approved and should be done after midterm break in March!

- The spotlight will be open consistently.

2. Shaded paths

Problem = lack of shaded path

- FMD confirmed to be placed from Hostel to CITS.

- Hostel to CLC and FSER to library will be taken into consideration due to budget constraint, as well as design(safety) constraint.

3. Elevators

- Problem = Slow and inefficient lifts around the campus

- The problem with invertors of the lift had been rectified by FMD. Some of the lift are a bit slow because it had been designed such speed purposely,to take care of disabled person (OKU).

4. MMU Mosque

- Request made to put signage to differentiate male and female section had been approved.

- Leakage in roof will be inspected.

- Piping issues at the toilet will be rectified.

5. Insufficient power supply at Mosque Square

- FMD already planning a new distribution board in Mosque Square. It will be more stable and will not really affect other supply in CLC.

6. Security Field

- Clarified that it is actually a hockey field, with an archery ground beside it. Place filled with rock is actually Archery training ground and is not meant for football.

7. Hostel

- Birds dropping smell has greatly REDUCED!

- There is still smell (less) as there are still birds around. The cleaners will clean the hostel more often during PEAK SEASON for birds.

8. Tables and Partitions

- FMD will clarify this matter on bulletin as it is unclear on who will keep tables, partitions and chairs back after events.It is advisable for everyone to take care of the facilities provided for clubs and societies.

9. CLC Male Toilet - Privacy Issue

- Certain toilets (squatting) in CLC has no elevated toilet bowl. This makes the bowl level with the gap of the bottom of the door. It makes it visible when business is done.

- FMD will personally inspect.

10. Refurbishment and repairing work for Astaka.

- The chair and the condition of Astaka will be improve before April.

11. SRC and FMD agreed to collaborate for inspection and patrol together around campus frequently based on agreed schedule, to make sure all the facilities for academic and for clubs and societies are under good condition as well as well maintained.

These are the brief summary of what was discussed and the feeedback from FMD. Special thanks to FMD upper management for spending their time with us to discuss about the student's complaint and to improve MMU facilities,even with their tight working schedule.

We will update on these issues from time to time.

Collecting secondhand books (to be sold)

Dear students,

Any student in MMU, who wishes to sell his/her used text books from previous trimesters can do so as we are gathering used text books to be sold on the fourth week of this trimester. The price of books to be sold will be fixed by the students (owners) themselves. SRC excos will act as the middleman to sell those books without gaining any profits .

Fo r students who are interested, please submit those books to any SRC excos at Sri Perdana (SRC Room) at SEC building during office hours from 12-21 February 2008 and fill up the necessary forms.

Meeting with FMD

Dear all,

There will be a meeting between SRC excos with FMD today, 12th February 2008, to discuss about several unsolved issues, as well as new welfare issues. Details are as follows:

1. Lack of lightings at football field and basketball court.
2. Lack of shaded paths between FSER & library, Hostel and CITS.
3. Discontented conditions of lifts at CLC, FIST, FBL, FET buildings.
4. Signs for mosque to indicate sections for male and female.
5. Piping at mosque – leakage.
6. Leakage at linkages of roof at mosque.
7. Unstable water and electricity supply at Mosque Square and CLC Concourse.
8. Security field that is covered with stones.
9. Birds’ excrement at hostel – Problem solved by cutting down trees around hostel area.
10. Dissatisfaction on conditions of bathrooms in hostel.
11. Request for additional spotlight in main field.
12. Repair and refurbish equipments at Astaka.
13. Inspect facilities at Sri Delima, Sri Berlian.

Listed are the complaints that SRC received. We will present this to FMD and hopefully they can be solved as soon as possible. Good luck to SRC, FMD and to all, for the betterment of the campus environment.

Flood Relief Team (Temerloh, Pahang)

From 5 January 2008 until 6 January 2008, around 80 students (including some SRC excos) from MMU Melaka and Cyberjaya went to Pahang to give support to the flood victims over there. We departed from MMU Melaka around 10 pm and reached at Cyberjaya at midnight. Our delegation was accompanied by a representative from Student Affairs Division (STAD).

At 12.30 am we continued our journey to Pahang. Finally at 3.00 am we arrived at Sekolah Rendah Agama Al- Taqwa. The teachers there were already waiting for our arrival. For your information, almost the entire building of Sek Ren Agama Al Taqwa was affected by flood. We can clearly see the damages around the school. All the text books, table, chair and many other properties were damaged.

Our work there started at 9.00 am after breakfast. Basically, all the volunteers were divided into 5 groups. Each group has their own tasks to complete. Some of us needed to paint the school gate, wall and also the classroom. Others were asked to clean all the tables and chairs and try to fix them if there are any damages. We also cleaned up the entire primary school compound.

During lunch, the villagers prepared Masak Gulai Ikan Patin for all of us as a token of appreciation for our help. After lunch we continued our task and completed all our tasks around 5.30 pm.

Finished at last

Although, all the students were tired but we felt so proud of ourselves because we were all willing to sacrifice our holiday to help people who were in need and gave our full commitment towards this activity. This activity gives us a lot of memorable experience. As a conclusion, as a Malaysian we must always help each other. Always help those who need help.

I am not sure exactly how it works, but this is amazingly accurate. Read the full description before looking at the picture.

The picture below has 2 identical dolphins in it. It was used in a case study on stress levels at The Mater Hospital. Look at both dolphins jumping out of the water. The dolphins are identical. A closely monitored, scientific study revealed that, in spite of the fact that the dolphins are identical, a person under stress would find differences in the two dolphins. The more differences a person finds between the dolphins, the more stress that person is experiencing.

What has SRC done?

"Perhaps somebody should file a complaint to the SRC about the SRC not being proactive and just waiting for somebody to complain about the obvious. At the very least, SRC members could file the complaints themselves if need be" - everling, nEXt-Boards

We, SRC excos, do file general complaints ourselves but we cannot do it all the time. And some complaints are specific and involve only a certain group of people therefore we need the affected people to come forward. Please don't say that the SRC is doing nothing because the excos of the Students' Welfare Division (SRC) are busting their asses to meet every departments to solve as many problems (complaints) as they can as fast as possible. It is irrational to demand everything to be done for you (MMU students in general) while you lay back and complain that SRC is doing nothing. If you want something to be done, you should put some minimal effort to get it done.

Unlike everyone else, I'm not saying that you should join SRC and make the difference yourself; rather I need you guys to just come and channel your complaints in a proper manner by writing it down on the complaint form provided by the SRC. Your identity will not be revealed to anyone outside of the SRC.

Bus Crash No More

When you buy a bus ticket and board a bus home this holiday season, remember Nian Ning, Mohd Zailani and Poon Eng who lost their lives on 25th January 2008 in a bus crash. All three were aged between 21 - 25 years old.

This is what happened to the double decker bus heading north on that fateful day:

"According to the survivors, the top deck was swaying left and right as the driver was going really fast. Some passengers at the bottom deck saw the driver smsing a lot and driving really fast in the heavy rain.

After awhile the passengers felt something amiss and saw the bus driver STAND UP suddenly (while the bus was moving!) and split seconds later, the passengers screamed really loudly and the bus spun three times, hit the divider and careened to the opposite highway where an oncoming MPV crashed into the back of the bus. Nian Ning and Mohd Zailani were sitting at the back row.

I’m not sure about the other chinese boy who also passed away. But that’s what I’ve gathered. The passengers of the MPV only suffered minor injuries. To add insult to the injury, the bus driver only sustained a broken right leg. I’m curious to know what is happening to him now though."

The driver involved in that bus crash had 13 outstanding summons against him. To add salt to the injury, he escaped with a broken leg while 3 of his passengers passed away and many others were injured.

Malaysians seem to forget easily. Our government keeps making promises after promises to enforce strict regulations to make public transportation safer but all this stops at grand announcements; implementation of the announcements seem to be lacking.

Now, as the election is around the corner, this is the best time for us to push for someone with some authority to make a change for the better. If not, we would forever travel in fear, entrusting our lives to bus drivers who don't seem to care for our safety.

Fundraising for Maxwell Onyema Ezeala

Dear all students and MMU staff,

Please kindly be informed that Maxwell Onyema Ezeala had met with an accident while playing football on 23rd September 2007. he had injured his spinal cord and currently he is admitted in PPUM,Kuala Lumpur. He is a student in FOSEE, Melaka and his intake is November.

Before he was being transferred to PPUM, he was sent to Pantai Hospital in Bangsar and the cost of his treatment is almost RM90000.HLA insurance had covered him up to the maximum which is RM25000 and now, his family is asking for our assistance to help them to pay for the cost of treament.

Therefore, as one of the MMU community, let us try our best to assist Maxwell Onyema Ezeala and please give some donation as to ease thier burden.

Due to inadequate fund to support Mr. Maxwell’s medical fees, SRC organized another fund raising campaign to help Mr. Maxwell raise money for his medical fees. The fund raising was held in conjunction with the CyberP week in President Square.

SRC was strongly supported by all parties, including CyberP management team, STAD, ISS, ex-OCs, volunteers and students who donated. We managed to collect an amount of RM1020.28 from the fund raising campaign.
